LAWRENCE — Bill Self pretended he was dribbling a basketball on the sideline, signaling the play call to his Kansas team early in the San Diego State game.
The set was for Perry Ellis. After the Kansas senior forward set a ball screen, he received a bounce pass from guard Frank Mason with the floor spaced, which allowed him freedom to make a move to the rim.
Though Ellis' running layup missed, Self wasn’t going to be afraid to go to him again. Less than a minute later, the KU coach called the same play, and this time, Ellis took the pass and knocked down a 19-foot jumper.
