LAWRENCE — The scene Tuesday night was all too familiar for those who follow this Kansas basketball team closely.
Frank Mason was on the court, writhing in pain. A partisan Allen Fieldhouse crowd was booing a perceived no-call aiding the Jayhawks’ foe — in this instance, No. 10 West Virginia and guard Tarik Phillip, who swung an elbow into Mason’s jaw while driving for a layup.
Only this time, the KU point guard would not be receiving any sympathy from the man who is typically his most ardent supporter.
“He wouldn’t have had to take an elbow if he could’ve guarded the ball and kept it in front of him,” KU coach Bill Self said following the game.
