Bill Self is officially a first-ballot hall of famer.
The Kansas basketball coach was on Saturday named an inductee in the upcoming class for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Self was in attendance for the announcement, broadcast live on ESPN2 from Glendale, Ariz., the site of this weekend’s Final Four.
Self said he was driving alone when he got the call for his selection and had to pull over to the side of the road, overcome with emotion.
“I would not have been the least bit disappointed if I didn’t get the thumbs up because I think it’s such an honor to just be a finalist, but I thought about if I did how I’d react,” Self said.
