Basketball Hall of Famer Lynette Woodard, a Wichita native, to join Winthrop staff

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Hall of Famer Lynette Woodard is back in college basketball, joining Winthrop’s staff as an assistant.

Coach Kevin Cook announced the hire Monday.

Woodard, considered a pioneer of the women’s game, was a two-time Olympian out of Kansas and the first woman to ever play with the Harlem Globetrotters. She and Cook were assistant coaches at Kansas from 1999-2002. Woodard became Kansas’ head coach for two seasons after that.

She was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.

She comes to the Eagles after spending the past three years working at Wichita State in two federally funded programs for students with disadvantaged backgrounds.
