SAN FRANCISCO — Gary Woodland came up just short of winning the biggest tournament of his life Sunday at the Match Play Championship at TPC Harding Park.
After making relatively quick work of Englishman Danny Willett during his semifinal on Sunday morning, Woodland faced Rory McIlroy, the No. 1-ranked player in the world, in the afternoon. The Topeka native had overcome an early deficit against Willett, but he couldn't duplicate the effort against McIlroy, losing 4 and 2 in the World Golf Championship event.
“It’s hard because you never want to lose any match, but to get to the finals and have the chance to win this one definitely hurts,” Woodland said.
