Many were surprised when prized five-star shooting guard Malik Newman signed with Mississippi State last season, but he may not be there much longer.
After a disappointing freshman season with the Bulldogs, Newman is looking to transfer, according to ESPN's Jeff Goodman:
Malik Newman’s father, Horatio Webster, declined to comment to ESPN — but multiple sources said Newman strongly considering transferring.

The Kansas Jayhawks have emerged as the early favorite to land Newman, as the Jayhawks were one of his finalists in his recruitment. He developed a close relationship with head coach Bill Self during that process - a key factor should he decide to transfer.
Another reason why Kansas is believed to be in the lead for him is the chance for immediate playing time. Frank Mason (graduation) and Devonte Graham (NBA) are expected to leave school after next season, meaning Newman would slide right into the starting lineup when he becomes eligible.
Kansas is also the favorite to land Duke transfer Derryck Thornton, who would be KU's starting point guard alongside Newman.
