Primarily a reliever for most of the past two seasons with the Cubs, Wood will battle for a rotation spot in Kansas City, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. Wood's competition will be fellow southpaw Jason Vargas and recently acquired righties Jason Hammel and Nathan Karns.
Wood also has value in the bullpen, where he spent the entirety of last season. Wood went 4-0 with a 2.95 ERA in 77 appearances in 2016, his first as a full-time reliever. But Wood pitched almost exclusively from the rotation over his first five Major League seasons -- two with Cincinnati and three with Chicago.
