With tip of the cap — and a great pitching performance — rookie wins hearts of Royals fans

One of the best things about watching a game is you never know when something magical is going to happen.

Case in point: The Royals’ 1-0 win over the Tigers on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium. Who would have predicted that, in his major-league debut, Eric Skoglund would outduel Detroit ace Justin Verlander?

But that’s what happened as Skoglund allowed two hits and a walk in 7 1/3 shutout innings. When taken out of the game by Royals manager Ned Yost, Skoglund got a standing ovation as he walked to the dugout. Skoglund doffed his cap and pointed to his parents in the stands.
