Vargas silences Tribe in 1st shutout since '14

The Royals' first run came courtesy of a replay challenge. Center fielder Lorenzo Cain originally was called out on a swinging bunt down the third-base line in the sixth inning. The Royals challenged and the call was overturned, thus allowing Alcides Escobar to score from third base on the play.

Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin, who had beaten the Royals twice this season, went 7 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and three runs, while striking out five.

Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 17 games -- the longest active one in the Major Leagues -- with an RBI double in the seventh.
