Stat of the Day: Whit’s Near Cycle

In Monday’s 10–7 loss to Detroit at Kauffman Stadium, Whit Merrifield put nearly made history. He homered to leadoff the third inning, had an RBI triple in the fourth and a one-out double in the sixth, before flying out in the seventh.

Merrifield becomes the first Royal to fall a single shy of hitting for the cycle since Billy Butler on Aug. 9, 2012 at Baltimore.

George Brett remains the last Royal to hit for the cycle, doing so on July 25, 1990 in Toronto.
