Kansas City beat Tampa Bay — who entered with the Majors’ best record — by scores of 3–2 and 8–2 on Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium. In doing so, the Royals recorded their first doubleheader sweep since July 7, 2015 vs. the Rays (day/night). It was their first traditional doubleheader sweep since Sept. 13, 2008 at Cleveland.
The Royals scored three first-inning runs in both games, marking the first time they’ve scored at least three in the first in consecutive games since Aug. 9–10, 2015, snapping a six-game streak without a first-inning run. The feat is especially impressive considering Tampa Bay entered with a Major League-best +25 run differential in the first inning (29–4).
