Royals’ Yordano Ventura exits start at Detroit because of back issue

Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura exited his start Saturday in the bottom of the fifth inning after a visit from head trainer Nick Kenney.

The club announced that Ventura was dealing with low-back tightness and spasms. He was listed as day-to-day.

Moments after the inning started, Ventura, who had thrown 85 pitches, had a brief conversation with Kenney and Royals manager Ned Yost before walking back to the dugout with Kenney by his side.

The injury surfaced just moments after Detroit’s Justin Upton doubled down the line past first baseman Kendrys Morales, who appeared to think the ball was going foul.
