Facing elimination in the American League Championship Series, the Royals sent Mark Gubicza to the mound to make the first postseason start.
Gubby delivered.
He was pulled with one out in the sixth inning and Royals holding a 5-2 lead. One of his inherited runners scored, but the Royals held on for a 5-3 victory. Designated hitter Hal McRae was the hitting hero with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Buddy Black pitched 3 1/3 innings and Dan Quisenberry struck out Garth Iorg to end the game.
The Royals, trailing 3-1 in the series, had gained the momentum and in the first year of the best of seven league championship series format, the American League playoffs were going the distance.
