The illness and eventual death of Dick Howser in June of 1987 left a leadership void at the top of the Kansas City Royals hierarchy. Sure, Ewing and Muriel Kauffman were still there, as was General Manager John Schuerholz, but Howser’s loss left a stunned locker room lacking its alpha dog leader.
