Royals get a lucky break in the 13th and beat the Reds

CINCINNATI

The baseball bounced down the right-field line, a wayward throw by Reds reliever Ryan Mattheus, and no replay review could overturn what came next. Jarrod Dyson raced around the bases, jetting from first to home on Kris Medlen’s bunt and Mattheu’s subsequent error for the deciding run in Kansas City’s 3-1 victory in 13 innings.

The circumstances that led to that moment were convoluted enough. The Royals bench was reduced to backup catcher Drew Butera and dinged-up second baseman Omar Infante. Medlen was the seventh Royals pitcher used in the game. A ninth-inning solo blast by Ben Zobrist off reliever Aroldis Chapman sent the game into extra innings, and a pair of replay decisions led to the ejection of manager Ned Yost.
