The Royals made the Hunter Renfroe signing official today, and to make room for him on the 40-man roster, they designated pitcher Max Castillo for assignment. The right-handed pitcher was acquired in 2022 from Toronto with Samad Taylor in exchange for Whit Merrifield.
The 24-year-old Castillo appears in parts of the last two season with the Royals as a long reliever and spot starter. In 39 innings he had a 6.69 ERA with 27 strikeouts and 19 walks, including a 4.43 ERA in seven relief appearances this year.
The move caps off a whirlwind of activity on the roster.
