Royals relievers gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings of work, blowing an eighth-inning lead in an 8-5 loss to the Cardinals Friday night.
Michael Lorenzen was shaky from the start for the Royals. He walked Masyn Winn to begin the game, then later gave up a two-run home run to Willson Contreras. The Cardinals put two more hitters on base before Lorenzen escaped without further damage. But the Cardinals plated another run in the third when Alec Burleson hit a solo home run to make it 3-0.
The Royals got those runs back in the bottom of the inning off Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas.
