Major League Baseball has announced who will sing the national anthem on Friday night before Game 3 of the World Series at Citi Field in New York, and it could be a sign of good fortune for the Kansas City Royals.
Billy Joel, 66, a native of the Bronx who was raised on Long Island, will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the third time before a New York Mets World Series game. He previously sang before Game 2 in 1986 and Game 1 in 2000.
And both times, the Mets lost.
According to Sports Illustrated, Joel has even been a long-distance bad-luck charm when it comes to singing the national anthem and the Mets:
“The Mets don’t even have to be playing in the same stadium as Joel for him to put the Star Spangled hex on them.
