Jason Vargas headed to disabled list with elbow injury as Yordano Ventura deals with ulnar nerve irritation

ST. LOUIS

The Royals were able to exhale after Yordano Ventura’s MRI on Saturday morning, but the team will still be without a member of their starting rotation for at least two starts. Jason Vargas is headed back to the disabled list with a strained flexor muscle in his left elbow.

Vargas suffered from a similar condition in May. Trainer Nick Kenney indicated the initial injury may have resurfaced. Vargas was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 9, his last start against Minnesota. Joe Blanton will replace Vargas in the rotation until Vargas is eligible to return on June 24.
