With two outs in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the 2014 World Series, Alex Gordon lined a ball into center field. San Francisco Giants outfielder Grego Blanco misplayed it, the ball got past him and Gordon made the turn at first and second base, then headed for third.
Royals fans were hoping Gordon would circle the bases and tie the game, but third-base coach Mike Jirschele stopped Gordon at third. The Royals went on to lose and Jirschele’s decision to hold Gordon at third base set off a city-wide debate; should Jirschele have sent Gordon or was stopping him at third base the right call?
