My first sports memory is 1985. All across Kansas City and the Midwest and beyond, there are thousands of us. We remember George Brett in long hair lifting Bret Saberhagen off the ground in the most famous hug in Royals history. We remember when the Royals always won.
I remember Game 6 in 1985. Mom and Dad let me stay up late to watch. Bedtime was probably 9, but it was closer to 10 when Jorge Orta hit the ball and ran like hell and we yelled when Don Denkinger spread his arms and called him safe.
“I don’t know about that,” Dad said.
