There was one surprise addition for the Royals on Friday on the first day that teams could expand from the usual 25-man rosters.
The Royals added pitcher Andres Machado, who was at Class AAA Omaha and wasn’t on the team’s 40-man roster. To make room for Machado, the Royals transferred left-handed pitcher Brian Flynn to the 60-day disabled list (left groin strain).
Here are five things to know about the newest Royals pitcher:
1. Machado struck out 14 in seven innings for Class A-Advanced Wilmington in a July 1 game against Salem.
“Anytime you possess an upper-90s fastball, when you can get it tilted to the bottom of the strike zone and you throw a hard slider with some quickness in it, it makes it very difficult on hitters,” Wilmington pitching coach Charlie Corbell told Michael Peng on MiLB.
