Edinson Volquez, Royals hold off White Sox 3-2 to open weekend series

As gratifying as it is for the Royals to maintain a large lead in the American League Central Division while scuffling over the past week or so, they’re rather keep the bulge by playing winning baseball.

They got off to a good start with Friday’s 3-2 victory over the White Sox.

The Royals rode a strong performance by their most reliable starter, Edinson Volquez, and strung together timely hits in the middle innings to open their second longest home stand of the season — 10 games — with a victory.

The Royals, who went 4-6 on the just-completed road trip, improved to 64-44 and held on to their 91/2-game lead over the Minnesota Twins, who defeated the Indians on Friday.
