ST. PETERSBURG -- After a rare defensive miscue from Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier, Lorenzo Cain was off to the races in Monday night's series opener.
In the third inning, with Royals leadoff man Alcides Escobar on second base, Cain lined a single off Rays starter Blake Snell. The ball skipped under the glove of a hard-charging Kiermaier, clipped his shoe and ricocheted into the gap in right-center. Cain never stopped running.
With third-base coach Mike Jirschele enthusiastically waving him on, Cain scored well ahead of the relay throw for the "Little League homer.
