Bullpen blows Ian Kennedy’s effort, Royals open the second half with 4-2 loss to the Tigers

DETROIT

So much for a fresh start. So much for a July reset.

The Royals opened the second half of this baseball season in the same manner in which they ended the first, falling 4-2 to the Detroit Tigers on Friday night here at Comerica Park.

The bullpen squandered a 2-1 lead and wasted a solid start from Ian Kennedy. Luke Hochevar and Joakim Soria combined to allow three runs in the bottom of the seventh, a brief blowup that resulted in another loss.

All three runs were pinned on Hochevar, who allowed a solo homer and allowed two base runners before Royals manager Ned Yost summoned reliever Joakim Soria with one out.
