Alex Gordon, the longest-tenured player in the Royals organization, is now a free agent. Gordon declined his $14 million player option for 2016 on Wednesday night, the team announced.
Gordon, the second overall pick in the 2005 MLB Draft by the Royals out of Nebraska, is free to sign with any team starting at 11 p.m. Friday. He hit .271 with 18 doubles, 13 homers and 48 RBIs in 104 games this season and played in all 16 postseason games as the Royals won their first World Series since 1985.
