Spring Training is nearly here for the defending World Series Champion Kansas City Royals. With spring training comes an intriguing position battle, as Omar Infante won't just be handed the starting second baseman job this season for the Royals. Instead, general Dayton Moore said there will be a battle at second base between Infante and Christian Colon.
"We're going to play the best players," Moore said. "Omar is a terrific second baseman. I know offensively he has not performed the way he has liked or the way we expect him to. "I just know we're going to put the best team out there each and every night, and I know Omar is capable of being that guy. But we like Christian Colon, too."
Colon played a big role in Game 5 of the World Series, driving in a run in the 12th inning. He's not as strong on defense as Infante, but he's a better.
That's an area that Infante struggled with last season, posting a poor .220 batting average. With Ben Zobrist now gone, Infante has a chance to reclaim the starting position he lost after going down with an injury in September. But he'll need to beat out Colon for the job, and that will be a fascinating battle to watch unfold.
