The Kansas City Royals have some new competition in the race to sign star outfielder Alex Gordon. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the St. Louis Cardinals are prepared to go all-in on signing Gordon after Jason Heyward spurned them to sign with the Cubs:
The #Stlcards now have sights set on Alex Gordon and plan to aggressively pursue him now that they're out on Heyward.

The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels are also showing a lot of interest in Gordon. There are reports that the Royals could be priced out of the Gordon sweepstakes as they're looking to salvage funds in an attempt to sign their core group of players in 2017, which would give the Cardinals a major advantage given their deep pockets, but Kansas City is determined to stay in the hunt for his services.
Gordon has said that he's willing to give the Royals a hometown discount, but the offer will have to be somewhat comparable to the other offers he receives. Any deal to re-sign him would be the largest in team history, surpassing the five-year, $55 million deal they gave Mike Sweeney in 2002 and Gil Meche in December of 2006.
Gordon has spent his entire nine-year career with the Royals. He posted a .271 batting average with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs in 104 games last season.
