The Kansas City Royals are "privately optimistic" about re-signing utility man Ben Zobirst, while left fielder Alex Gordon remains an options despite a rising price tag.
One anonymous American League GM weighed in on Zobrist and Gordon's current situation in free agency, indicating that the Royals "may not be in the position to sign either."
Via Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe:
“The analytics guys don’t like when we call good players ‘winners,’ ” said the GM. “But these guys are winners. Kansas City may not be in the position to sign either, but they are one of the many reasons why the Royals won. Wherever these two end up, they will make their teams better.” Our GM thinks the White Sox would be a great fit for Zobrist, and Gordon would be perfect for the Red Sox.
The Royals are currently surveying alternative options to the duo, with trade scenarios being floated around involving Boston Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and New York Yankees LF Brett Gardner. However, nothing is set in stone right now as GM Dayton Moore continues to gauge both Gordon and Zobrist while tweaking his pitches accordingly.
Stay tuned.
