At one point, Javier Arenas was the return Scott Pioli wanted for the trade of franchise icon and future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez. Today he is officially a member of the Ottawa Redblacks, a franchise in the Canadian Football League.
The Redblacks announced the signing on Thursday, interestingly labeled “international defensive back”, which means Arenas’ NFL career is likely over. Arenas lasted five seasons in the NFL, including three with the Kansas City Chiefs who drafted the cornerback and return man in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Arenas failed to live up to the high expectations that come with being a Top 50 pick in the NFL.
