In a perfect world, one of the in-house options at cornerback would have settled into the starting outside spot opposite Marcus Peters. Terrance Mitchell indeed had looked very good down the stretch in 2016, although it was such a limited sample size. Phillip Gaines was healthy and coming into a contract year with much to prove. Steven Nelson looked good in his first full year and has shown the ability to play larger than his size.
