KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith said he wasn’t making a political statement on Sunday when in his news conference after the game against the Carolina Panthers, he wore a safety pin on his shirt.
Some people have come to wear safety pins since last week’s election to symbolize their solidarity with victims of racial, homophobic or religious discrimination.
“It wasn’t anything political," Smith said. “Nothing to do with the presidential election. For me, just kind of everything to do with tolerance, understanding. It’s something I actually found out about at my kid’s school, where they were trying to teach about diversity and tolerance.
