Cornerback Rashean Mathis will retire as a Jaguar.
The Jaguars will honor perhaps the greatest defensive player in the franchise’s history when Mathis signs a ceremonial one-day contract on Wednesday to retire.
Mathis, a former Englewood High standout, owns the franchise record for career interceptions with 30, doubling Aaron Beasley’s second-best total of 15. He returned an interception 63 yards for a touchdown in the Jaguars’ last playoff win, a 31-29 victory at Pittsburgh on Jan. 5, 2007.
Mathis was selected in the second round (39th overall) out of Bethune-Cookman by the Jaguars in 2003 after the team took quarterback Byron Leftwich in the first round.
