The Jaguars honored former cornerback Rashean Mathis on Wednesday as he signed a ceremonial one-day contract to officially retire as a member of the team. The 35-year-old Mathis is perhaps the greatest defensive player in the franchise’s history.
Mathis, a former Englewood standout, played for the Jaguars for 10 seasons after being selected in the second round out of Bethune-Cookman in the 2003 draft. He is the team’s career leader in interceptions with 30, a total doubling any other Jaguars defender. He returned an interception 63 yards for a touchdown in the Jaguars’ last playoff win, a 31-29 victory at Pittsburgh on Jan.
