The Jaguars’ pursuit of a pass rusher hit another roadblock Friday when they hosted New York Giants free agent Robert Ayers at EverBank Field only to see him leave and agree to a three-year, $21 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Armed with the NFL’s most salary cap space and a desperate need to acquire a defensive end, the Jaguars have been skunked.
The Jaguars did sign two players: New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara to a one-year deal and Dallas Cowboys guard Mackenzy Bernadeau to a two-year contract.
But like defensive end Olivier Vernon on Wednesday, Ayers was another one who got away.
