Jaguars linebackers Paul Posluszny and Telvin Smith were positioned at the line of scrimmage, each shaded outside one of New England center David Andrews’ shoulders.
At the snap, Posluszny and Smith back-pedaled into coverage, but strong safety James Sample blitzed unblocked from quarterback Tom Brady’s blind-side. Making a quick decision (1.65 seconds), Brady found tight end Scott Chandler for a 17-yard gain to convert the third-and-4.
But at least it was a wrinkle by the Jaguars’ defensive braintrust.
One problem: It was way too late. The play came when the Jaguars trailed 37-10 (they would lose 51-17) and there were 35 seconds left in the third quarter.
