For three hours Wednesday, the opening of free agency for the Jaguars was a debacle-in-progress.
It was discouraging because defensive end Olivier Vernon joined the New York Giants.
It was concerning because the Jaguars were unable to acquire a top-flight cornerback.
And it was maddening because the only activity involved a punter and a backup tight end.
But the Jaguars provided hope around 7 p.m. when a league source said they agreed to terms on a five-year, $35.5 million contract with Cleveland Browns free safety Tashaun Gipson.
Gipson joins defensive tackle Malik Jackson, running back Chris Ivory and punter Brad Nortman as the Jaguars’ initial four additions.
