Back in training camp, nobody with the Jaguars saw this level of exasperation coming. General manager Dave Caldwell invested $40.3 million in guaranteed money to add four free-agent pieces on defense — Jared Odrick, Dan Skuta, Davon House and Sergio Brown — figuring to significantly elevate a mediocre unit.
So far, one word would describe how it’s panning out: pffft!
Three-quarters into the 2015 season, the operation put together by head coach Gus Bradley and coordinator Bob Babich isn’t remotely close to making progress, except in stopping the run. In every other significant category that measures defensive proficiency, the Jaguars have regressed to the point where both architects are admittedly running out of answers to make it even modestly effective.
