But as he faces an uphill climb to prove to the Jaguars coaching staff he is worth a roster spot, back-up defensive end Bjoern Werner is glad it happened when it did.
On a second down play midway through the fourth quarter of the Jaguars’ preseason opener against the New York Jets, Werner was lined up directly over an opposing tight end and recognized the blocking scheme in front of him.
Like he did consistently enough at Florida State to become a first-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2013 draft, Werner fired off the line at the snap and was able to get into the backfield and sack Jets quarterback Bryce Petty for an eight-yard loss.
