The Jaguars have resumed talks with their star kicker Josh Scobee after the organization remained silent since the end of last season. The kicker lead the team in scoring for most of the season, as the passing and running games struggled to convert in the red zone. With the franchise tag being the key to salary, Scobee will only earn $2.8M if an extension cannot be agreed upon.
With 9 seasons in the NFL, Scobee has played for the Jaguars since 2004. In the 2011 season, he racked 93 points with the longest being 55 yards. Throughout his entire career with the Jaguars, Scobee has piled up 755 points. The Jaguars have no reason I can see to want to let go of their kicker, but they did draft punter Bryan Anger in the 3rd round this year, so anything is possible.
Holding onto Scobee will also continue to build familiarity on a team compromised mostly of young and new names. If you ever have the pleasure of attending a Jacksonville Jaguars game, you’ll see quite a few Scobee jerseys mixed in the with Maurice Jones-Drew sea. It’s not only because of Scobee’s ability to put the team on his back in a dry season, but also because he is a clutch player.
Back in October of 2010, Scobee kicked the game winning 59 yard field goal against division rival Indianapolis Colts with a final score of 31-28. This was a sweet win for Jaguars fans after a whole game of playing catch up. Yet, the team has found itself playing an entire season’s worth of catch up.
With one of the biggest franchise rebuilding projects I’ve seen in a long time, the Jaguars should not only find a deal for Josh Scobee, but keep the franchise tag pinned to him as long as possible.
