IOWA CITY — Five wrestlers with ties to the Iowa State wrestling team and Cyclone Wrestling Club competed in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday. The Ames Tribune looks at all five of their results from the morning session.
Jake Varner, 97 kilograms
Varner cruised through the morning session to win the challenge tournament at 97 kilograms (roughly 213 pounds). After a first round bye, he rolled in his quarters, semis and finals matches without surrendering a point, earning him a spot in Sunday night’s best-of-three finals against defending world champion Kyle Snyder.
