A crowd of people gathered inside the Iowa State women’s basketball team’s locker room. School president Steven Leath was there. So was athletic director Jamie Pollard. They all smiled and listened as coach Bill Fennelly addressed his team.
“Celebrate with each other,” Fennelly said. “Celebrate with your family and your friends. You just did something really special. You just beat Iowa.”
The Cyclones roared in euphoria, and broke a group huddle by screaming “Cyclone State.” It was a small part of a tremendous 69-66 victory over No. 23 Iowa on Friday, a game many members of the team won’t forget for a while, if at all.
