Women’s Basketball: Fernstrom to leave program

On Sunday evening, Bryanna Fernstrom pulled out her phone and began writing a text message. The sophomore center sent it to coach Bill Fennelly, asking to meet on Monday morning.

There, Fernstrom walked into Fennelly’s office and asked for her release from the program. Fennelly announced that he will grant Fernstrom a release a his weekly press conference on Monday.

“I did not see this coming,” Fennelly said. “Surprised. Definitely surprised.”

Fernstrom played in 46 career games for the Iowa State women’s basketball team, and started 37 of them. She started 12 of the 15 games this season, averaging 9.
