As she gets ready to hit, Brittany Gomez’s mind is a flurry of activity. She’s thinking about her last at-bat, any bad habits that cropped up, hoping to eliminate them.
Thoughts continue to pop up, like a personal back-and-forth iMessage conversation, as she strides to the plate.
Then, nothing.
When she steps into the batter’s box, it all vanishes, like a dropped call. Her mind goes blank. It’s her personal fortress of solitude.
It’s in that silence that Gomez does her best work, churning out hit after hit.
“Being in there, swinging the bat, it frees your mind,” Gomez said.
