Wes Washpun scored 28 points as the Northern Iowa men’s basketball team knocked off No. 5 Iowa State, 81-79, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines at the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic.
Behind Washpun, Paul Jesperson scored 21 for UNI on a 7-of-10 showing from the field, but played just 22 minutes. No other Panther player scored more than eight points.
UNI (7-3) led by as many as 11 in the second half. The Cyclones (9-1) closed to within 80-79 with 15 seconds left, but were unable to score the go-ahead basket.
Georges Niang scored 30 on 10-of-17 shooting, while Jameel McKay and Abdel Nader added 18 and 14, respectively.
