Monte Morris’ stay at USA Basketball’s tryout for the Pan American Games was a short one.
The Iowa State point guard was one of five cuts Thursday as the team trimmed its roster from 21 to 16.
Morris, a junior, averaged 11.9 points and 5.2 assists against just 1.1 turnover per game last season to establish himself among the country’s best at his position.
Point guards Isaiah Cousins (Oklahoma), Melo Trimble (Maryland) and Fred Van Vleet (Wichita State) were among those who survived the cut. Tryouts began Tuesday in Colorado Springs, Colo..
The team will eventually be whittled to 12 players for the competition, which takes place July 21-25 in Toronto.
