La Gesse Column: The interesting intersection of high hopes, a hard job and ISU’s football opening

As he’s about to embark on a coaching search, Jamie Pollard took stock of the Iowa State football program.

He likes the facilities. He loves the roster. He’s continually amazed by the fan base.

He looks around and sees a winner waiting to happen.

“We’ve done it,” the athletic director said. “Everything is in place.”

And those seven words are part of the reason why this ISU opening is so fascinating. This is a program widely considered one of the 10 toughest power five conference jobs in America. But the more the administration talks the less it can come off that way.
