La Gesse Column: Sadly, Cyclones more than prepared for unexpected news like Mangino’s departure

With a few minutes to kill before class, Brock Dagel flipped on the Iowa State football press conference.

He watches most Mondays. He wants to see what coach Paul Rhoads will say, but couldn’t have guessed what Rhoads would say next.

Rhoads started off the most unexpected press conference of the season by announcing the departure of offensive coordinator Mark Mangino and spent most of the next 20 minutes addressing the topic.

“It is surprising, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned over my years here it’s things in college football move fast,” Dagel said. “A lot of things happen.
