Hines Column: Spotlight off Hoiberg in NBA coaching debut

CHICAGO – Fred Hoiberg was always in the spotlight during his five years on the sideline as coach for Iowa State. Now, as the head of the Chicago Bulls, Hoiberg is just another part of the act, and a secondary player at that.

Make no mistake, Hoiberg will be thrust to the forefront should the Bulls explode to the top of the Eastern Conference or limp through mediocrity in the post-Tom Thibodeau era, but it was readily apparent in Hoiberg’s Bulls debut, a thrilling 97-95 win over LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers, that Hoiberg has moved from the face of a university to a players’ league where celebrity and entertainment rule.
