Football: Lanning named starting QB

It’s Lanning time for the Cyclones.

Quarterback Joel Lanning is expected to start for Iowa State against Texas on Saturday (6 p.m., FS1). Lanning is listed as the starting quarterback on the depth chart, having jumped over Sam Richardson.

Lanning, a sophomore, replaced Richardson at No. 2 Baylor last week and provided a spark for the offense. He was 12 of 17 for 144 yards with three touchdowns. With Lanning at quarterback, the Cyclones scored 27 points and gained 342 total yards. Before he replaced Richardson the Cyclones only had 46 total yards.

Richardson, a fifth-year senior, started the first seven games and is yet to find his stride this season.
